Vintage Jugendstil Beer Stein R.Merkelbach/Goebel by Schmidt #1711 Repro c.1983

Description: Presented is a reproduction of a very important German beer stein manufactured by Reinhold Merkelbach - the most famous manufacturer of Jugendstil beer steins and other ceramics.

At the end of 1800 the R.Merkelbach factory began to produce artistically designed stoneware, its so-called "art pottery". The production of rustic tableware still continued. Merkelbach´s artistic designs endeavored to mirror the taste of the customers, who fancied scenes of everyday life and historical stories. "Jugendstil" was a new epoch for Merkelbach.

Among the artists employed were H.van de Velde (Weimar), P. Behrens, F.H. Ehmcke and especially R.Riemerschmid (Munich) and P.Wynand (Rome). The ceramics pieces created by R.Merkelbach are the best examples of the new aesthetics that emerged to replace the so-called Historismus style that was reigning for almost half a century.

In 1971 50% of the Merkelbach Manufactur KG was sold to W.Goebel KG. Some of the most interesting Jugendstil/Art Nouveau designs were reproduced in limited editions from 1982 under the Merkelbach/Goebel name.

This beer stein is made of traditional (classical) gray stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze and pewter lid. The technology specialists at Goebel/Merkelbach were able to reproduce this glaze quite precisely. The lid is also a very good copy of the original Merkelbach Jugendstil lids that were used for this type of beer steins.

The stein was designed by “Kunstgewerblehrer Schmidt” or "Art teacher Schmidt" as it was described in contemporary R.Merkelbach catalogs. There are several suggestions as who this person might be. The Stein Marks website suggests it was Theodor Schmidt, the Beer Stein Library provides information from a German source that the “Kunstgewerblehrer Schmidt” was either Adolf Schmidt, a drawing teacher at the Trade School in Wiesbaden; or Prof. Philip Schmidt, director of the Arts and Crafts School in Erfurt. In any case, the design created was very popular at the time - R.Merkelbach used it in several models as well as some other design from the same artist.

The stein is in excellent condition - there is no damage or repairs. It is 7" tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity.

Please note - this is one of the most important beer stein designs made by the most famous designer.

The R.Merkelbach Jugenstil beer stein are presented in many German Museums and in the British Museum as well -

Simple and very elegant - the true work of a genius. The original Merkelbach Jugendstil items are quite expensive - you can have an exact copy at a fraction of the price.
