Be sure to have a look at our other items! This is a beautifully designed, animated musical chalet cuckoo clock that was produced about 50 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, Villingen "West Germany" by "Emil Schmeckenbecher," one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world. This clock is designed to look like a detailed working saw mill amidst the landscape like many that used to be found in the mountains of southern Germany. It's quite fancy and has an upper platform complete with red beaded trim, a wooden picket fence on either side of the case, a stack of logs, some kindling and two or three stumps. There are two colorful Black Forest men to the left side operating a two man saw and another equally impressive Black Forest man to the right side holding an axe over a log he is intent on splitting. The background is quite colorful and features a round opening near the top with wooden shutters and a colorful slumbering cuckoo bird in the opening. The lower part is simply gorgeous with a colorful pine tree to the left and to the right amidst a hillside with rolling hills. This clock has a great distressed look to it and I suspect it spent some time in the barn during its lifetime. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. There is a wooden door at the very back that is secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, weight driven movement produced by "Regula" and bearing the Schmeckenbecher name. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, cuckoo and music activities. The bellow or whistle tubes are intact and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottom of each hour, the colorful bird in the round opening near the top wakes up and gives off a single cuckoo sound before drifting back to sleep. What's cool too is that the men sawing the log move the saw back and forth as time ticks away! Then at the top of each hour, the bird awakens again and correctly cuckoos the current number of hours before going back to sleep. Then the wood chopper is supposed to chop wood and a Swiss music box is supposed to play The Woodchoppers March but it does not. I have heard the music play so I know the mechanism is good but the butterfly fan came off and I simply don't have the time to put it back on like I used to do in years past. I do have the part (shown in a picture) and will send it along. The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, animation is good too, and it cuckoos well too. I noticed that the time was a bit sluggish so I put a heavier weight on that hook and it works just fine since...this heavier weight is also included with the clock. I've looked the clock over fairly well and find some chipping here and there and like I said earlier, a distressed look; gorgeous on display! This clock is most impressive and a great example of old style Black Forest craftsmanship. It is the ideal size too measuring about 12 1/2" at its highest (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 10" or so across the top. Keep in mind that despite the fact that the clock doesn't look real old, it is and we don't know the service history. The movement, however, does show signs of maintenance but nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We often recommend to our clock customers to have their vintage or antique clocks serviced at least once every three years. Doing so will keep a classic clock like this one, healthy for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a carved wooden chalet pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clock is in a class all by itself and is certain to be the focal point of any collection. Any guests in your home or office will be more than pleased to see and hear this rare German timepiece in action. Have the music and animation repaired, repair it yourself, or leave it the way it is.
