Seller: amgasman (3.129) 100%, Location: Oswestry, Shropshire, Ships to: Americas, Europe, Asia, AU, Item: 273305371462 Up for auction is this vintage English made Newbridge 'positive distance gas control ' set, complete with original hard card box. These were available in a number of types, variants and with control wires of varying length, they were packed in the same box, nomatter what, so often dont seem to match the shape of the dividers. Box is approx 9 inches square and 1&3/4 inches deep, as you can see it is beginning to come apart. Inside is Brown Bakelite wall switch unit and battery case . Typically placed in same position as an electric light switch would be. The tumbler switch has heavy brass backing. Unit is 5&1/2 inches long, just under 2&1/2 inches wide. The battery case has a slide off cover, designed to hold a typical 3 volt battery ( cycle lamp battery ). There is a home made plate to facilitate using 2 ordinary cells . Brass valve, fits in the down pipe to your ceiling gas light, Shield to protect the bakelite electical connector Gas injector from a ceiling gas lamp Bakelite connector block Electro catalytic lighter. Approx 12 feet of the mechanical 'bowden' cable and 12 feet of the special fireproof electrical 2 wire cable Envelope with assorted cleats etc In operation.... the tumbler is connected with the 'bowden cable ' to the gas valve. It is used to push and pull the valve open or shut . When turning the light on the motion of the tumbler opens the valve. At full 'open' the tumbler switch pushes closed a contact in the battery case, and 3 volts dc flows through the wire, connected to the igniter . The igniter has a tiny ( shrouded ) platinum coil. The current is enough to warm the coil. In the presence of coal gas ( which contains hydrogen ) the warmth is enough to promote a catalytic reaction between Hydrogen and the air and this further warms the coil, eventually it is hot enough to ignite the gas. Usually 3 or 4 seconds Once the mantle is lit the tumbler is released and springs back a few mm disconnecting the battery. The igniter is placed above and to side of mantle, where it is in the 'cloud' of unburnt gas when lamp is on but not lit, but is out of the path of flame / fumes once lit. The gas valve is engineered to work with minimum resistance and incorporates an oil 'well' with spring loaded ball in the centre, to be oiled with a spout occasionally . I will enclose a photocopy of the instruction sheet. these are difficult to fit and maintain, need some careful fitting and adjustment to get right . The bowden cable MUST be routed with very light curves and not bent tight or there will be too much friction and it wont work . .These were popular from the late 1920s until the 1950s, finally ceased manufacture about 1960. Some parts of this have been fitted, used , then removed and put back in the box after about 5 years use ! Have then been in storage for approx 50 years. Check out my other lots, save on postage !
