Case: 14.5" gilt painted metal Gothic cathedral mantel clock case made of two symmetrical halves that are screwed together. There is a skeletonized and fish-scale reticulated steeple which encloses the alarm bell and is surmounted by a fleur-de-lys ornamental finial. The steeple is flanked by two gilt spires resting on fluted pilasters above a trefoil decorated cornice which encloses the lance-leaf dial bezel on the facade. Below, several Gothic columns rest on a polygonal platform in which a monk stands and holds onto a rope with his right hand. His right arm is hinged and has a cord going up to the alarm bell. A lever from the movement rings the bell in the belfry and moves his arm at the same time, with the appearance that he is ringing the bell. The architectural base with fluting and geometric texture there is a skeletonized trefoil design at the front. Dial: Enameled white dial with Roman hours, closed minute ring with Arabic markers placed every five minutes along the periphery. There are English Spade hands and an alarm pointer. Movement: A canister type, 30 hour movement painted red at the back of the container. The spring is wound and time set from the back and the alarm hand is set from the back of the case as well. The back of the canister is marked 'Reveil' (clock) with a logo of an A and C with a cross between them (unidentified). It is possible that the movement is imported from France. Condition: Dial: Compound fractures of the porcelain dial with small chipping. Hands are losing paint. I believe these clocks originally had 'trefoil' hands, but I cannot be certain if the hands are replacements. The case has been fully repainted in gold paint. I do not know if this clock is functioning. I am unable to locate the company whose trademark was the AC with the cross or plus sign between them. No one seems certain as to the precise origin of this type of clock.
