Displaying a very good quality of execution, this miniature on natural material resembles works of 18th-century Swiss miniaturist Robert Mussard. It shows Mme Judith Gessner, nee Heidegger (1736 Zurich - 1818). On February 22, 1761, in Zurich, she married well-known Swiss artist Salomon Gessner (1730-1788). They had three children. Mme Gessner was regarded by her contemporaries as a "woman of rare beauty, taste and spirit". A widely known portrait of Judith Gessner painted by famous Swiss-German portraitist Anton Graff (see our images nr.7-9) is housed in Swiss National Museum in Zurich. Provenance: Swiss antique trade
