Seller: classicfantasyartworks (3.007) 100%, Location: Ocala, Florida, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 143381786663 English Tile Maker - Circa 1880 "Victorian Brown Floral Design"-- Antique * Transfer Print * Buff Clay Biscuit -- This historical tile is decorated with a stylized swirl of a flamboyant floral design, which covers the complete tile, and features what appears to be the "Mirabilis Jalapa," or, "Marvel of Peru," or, the "Four O'Clock" flower. This tile was possibly created by one of the Minton Companies, or its affiliated companies, circa 1880, as a poly-chrome, molded majolica, version of this same pattern, has been identified. These tiles would have been made prior to the majolica version. The floral design begins as it rises from the ground, at lower right, then swirls around displaying curvaceous stems and leaves, to present a large, bell-shaped, flower head, with extraordinarily long filaments and anthers. The design is rendered in a middle brown color upon a tough buff clay body, which was then coated with a slightly tinted, crystalline, glaze. Condition: Very Good to Excellent These tiles present well, although close inspection may reveal a few glaze nibbles upon some edges, or a slight smudge caused by soot and contact with the cast iron frame of an English fireplace. The Versa display traces of smoke stains from their use as fireplace tiles. The versa are an older 8x8 box grid pattern, which is not marked. The lack of the word, "England," embossed upon the versa, indicates these tiles were made prior to the tariff acts of the 1890's. which demanded the tile's country of origin be placed upon it. This grip pattern was is typical of Minton, and the design was used by Minton for a later majolica tile, but we cannot positively be certain if Minton, Hollins & Co., or The Campbell Brick & Tile Co., or Mintons, Ltd., created them.
