But, Minton, Hollins & Co. enameled tiles, such as the one offered here, are exceptionally hard to find, and were all of the highest quality. This kind of tile was the most brilliantly colored and the most expensive wall tiles Minton, Hollins made. This enameled tile cost a small fortune in 1875 and were mainly purchased by governments, institutions, large enterprises, and the wealthier establishments, who often used these hardy tiles for exterior installations and to embellish public areas. Because their original cost was so high, these tiles were never manufactured in great numbers. They were uncommon then, and ever more so, today. Heavy, thick, deeply molded, beautifully designed, and richly colored with vivid, opaque, enamels, this type of robust tile may still be seen on historical buildings around the world. This tile is created from hearty, buff-colored, clay, which is tougher than the white clay most often used for wall tiles of the time. This made this type of tile less susceptible to damage and weathering. In addition, hand enameled tiles allowed for the precise placement of brilliant colors, which would not react with each other in the kiln, and, enameled tiles did not suffer from crazing of its glaze, like a majolica tile. This low-relief design displays clusters of deep blue grapes and richly detailed, emerald green, leaves running along a circular scrolling buff-hued, vine, flowing across a ground of deep burgundy-brown. Condition: Excellent The only imperfections are all located upon the upper frame bar, where two glaze nibbles may be found. But, as one can see, the design is without wear or blemish. The verso displays a Minton, Hollins & Co., grid pattern, which is fully marked and indicates the tile was made post 1870. The verso displays some traces of mortar. Please examine our provided high-resolution scans of this tile to determine its exact state.
