Description Mega Rare Untied States Lighthouse Board Inspectors Stopwatch? With Cylinder EscapementMade by P.F. Brevete The United States Lighthouse Board was the second agency of the US Federal Government, under the Dept. of Treasury, responsible for the construction and maintenance of all lighthouses and the navigation aids in the U.S. , between 1852 and 1910. The stopwatches were issued to lighthouse keepers and district inspectors to time the rotations of the lights. These had to be timed precisely because ships at sea identify which lighthouse they are seeing by the rotation of the lens. DESCRIPTIONThis watch is approx 2 3/8" (60mm) in diameter and 15/16" (23.5mm) deep. It is very difficult to get an exact date on these watches, but the movement is stamped with a number “3378”. The other markings on the movement look to be “Brevete SGDG” , The watch has some scratches from normal wear and the dial has a some hairline cracks and small chips as seen in the photographs. The casing has a deep, rich patina to its brass and on the side in period script is engraved, 'M' and 'A'. The watch is in working condition (the switch on the side will start/stop it, and the button at the top can be used to reset it. The dial on the back is to wind it, and it is in working order. As these are so rare the condition is not really that important but I still need to mention it. Although this is not inscribed 'US Lighthouse Board', extensive reaserch has revealed that not all of them were and I can find no record that these stopwatches being supplied to any other organisations other than the US Lighthouse Board or being sold individually to the public. Further research carried out by yourself is recommended to satisfy your own mind about what you are buying. These rarely come up for sale and in the US, a maritime specialist has one for sale at $4,300, so this one I believe is resaonably priced. 0 7 7 3 1 5 6 4 0 0 8 Please remember as with all Antique and secondhand items, please be your own judge about date, condition and description before purchasing as I am not an expert in such things.
