"Barbizon – Houses of Millet, Diaz, Charles Jacque, and Robert Louis Stevenson." Barbizon was a famous artists’ colony, a village located in the Seine-et-Marne department in north-central France, bordering the Fontainebleau forest, outside of Paris. Artists flocked there for 50 years, from 1825 until 1875, and today the village has a museum of Barbizon School artworks housed in the former Gann Inn, where many artists lived, and Rousseau’s house and workshop. Millet’s home is also a public museum and gallery today.

Many famous French artists of the 19th century moved here to pursue a new realist movement in art, which came be known as the Barbizon School. Ecole de Barbizon artists broke with the classical traditions of art, focused on close and direct observation of nature, pursued a tonalist style of color treatment, and became successful and well-regarded. The village of Barbizon became famous for this active artist’s colony. Barbizon artists tutored and befriended artists who would subsequently create the Impressionist movement, and thus, the Barbizon movement blazed the trail for the development of what we now know as “modern art.” Famous artists of the Barbizon School included Jean-Francois Millet, Charles Daubigny, Charles Jacque, Narcisse Virgilio Diaz de la Pena, Theodore Rousseau, Camile Corot, Henri Harpignies, and others. The famous English author Robert Louis Stevenson also lived in Barbizon for a time.

Many subsequent copies have been made of this original image by artists other than Maurice Jacque.

The image is approximately 10-1/4” wide by 7-5/8” high (25.8 cm x 19.3 cm).

The print paper is 14-3/4” wide by 11” high (37.5 cm x 28 cm), and is mounted on board.

The print has not yet been matted or framed. It is in very good condition, and would be a notable addition to any collection of 19th c French Barbizon school paintings, prints, and drawings.
