This masterpiece is from our rare print collection. It is a superb work by Hashimoto Chikanobu (Japanese, 1838-1912), one of the greatest ukiyo-e artists of the Meiji era (1868-1912). It is his Plum Garden Moon made in 1884, over 130 years ago. Chikanobu was from a distinguished samurai family. As a youth he studied under both Kuniyoshi and Kunichika. Though he designed many warrior and kabuki prints, he is perhaps best known for his marvelous bijin-ga, or beauty portraits, such as in this magnificent 3-panel triptych. Lovely triptych of upper class social life in old Japan. The beauty in the center is playing a gekkin, a type of lute. Two attendants serve her guests with trays of food and saki. There is delicate embossing on the kimono trim. The scene is framed by the flowering branches of old plum trees and backlit by a full moon. An enchanting scene. Would be very attractive on your home or office wall. A superb choice for the interior decorator. Hashimoto Chikanobu’s masterworks are in the collections of many of the world’s great museums. Among them are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston as well as the Tokyo National Museum. ARTIST: Hashimoto Chikanobu (Japanese, 1838-1912).
