Item:253012775315LATIN AMERICAN /PERUVIAN, PRE-COLOMBIAN ENGORGED MALE FERT FIG/GLAZED RED CLAY . LATIN AMERICAN (PERUVIAN) PRE-COLOMBIAN ENGORGED MALE FERTILITY MALE FIGURE w/ HEADDRESS & HOLDING an ENGORGED PHALLUS/GLAZED NATURAL RED CLAY (Small, satchel-sized figure, w/opening at top & at tip of phallus) (A facsimile: circa late 1940's-1960's) This vintage facsimile Latin American (Peruvian) glazed ceramic male fertility diminutive pitcher, is small enough to fit into a side bag or personal satchel, for inspiration and good luck for its male enlistee. The construction is of fired local red clay, which is glazed over with a semi-gloss/matte glaze finish of burnt sienna, burnt umber and deep, dried blood red, giving the piece of ceramic art, a layered, semi-transparent color surface that appears to be hand rubbed. The top of the figure, where an embroidered cloth head-dress adorns the figures head, there is an opening, ostensibly to pour water into. The very tip of the enormous, engorged phallus (penis) has a slit, slotted opening, ostensibly to pour water out of the head of the curved phallus. Even though to the contemporary viewer today, this may seem quite humorous and a bit over-the-top, in pre-European Latin America, this would have been readily accepted as a celebration of the circle of life and of the importance of men producing offspring. The emphasis on the enormity of the phallus was to give the man a sense of mythical sexual strength and duration, ensuring that he properly perform his role in the production of offspring and of the maintenance of his people. This is in all likelihood, a ceramic facsimile of the original antique ceramic figure, which would have pre-dated the 17th Century. This was most likely a work of ceramic art that would have been a copy of the original figure and offered to American and European tourists making pilgrimages to Peru, as they did in droves in the late 1950's to early 1970's. Originals are usually in museums and in private collections but this period facsimile still maintains the authenticity and feeling of the original.
