Item:133068868385Gatcombe Antiques A very nice Victorian medium oak stationery box with a brass screw topped inkwell and working lock and key. The sloping door to the righ has a circular brass escutcheon. The lock is original and the key is an old one that has been adapted to work in the lock, which it does perfectly. The door open to reveal a waterfall arrangement of dividers. At the bottom of these is a pen tray with the old inkwell to the right that has a few nibbles here and there, to the glass edges. At the base, there is a draw that pulls out which has a small brass drop ring handle. Within the interior of the right door, there is a removable porcelain plaque that was for writing notes with a pencil that could then be wiped off. On the left hand door, there is a criss cross arrangement of green ribbon, held in place with brass dome topped pins. This has been restored and it was for keeping business card, notes etc. It sits on a raised ebonised plinth and the base has been given a new green baize lining. The writing slope has been fully restored, including cleaning, re-waxing and being given a good polishing. It is now back to what it was when first manufactured, towards the end of the 19th century. It has, however, acquired the addition of having a lovely aged patina that only time can give! Measurements: 30 cm wide. 17 cm deep and 26 cm high. Aftercare: Cleaned and restored to a high standard. All you need to do is wipe over with a soft cloth from time to time. You can occasionally use a spray furniture polish that contains bees wax, which will maintain its satin sheen. Please don’t use a silicone spray as this could be detrimental to the waxed surface.
