THE GRAMMAR OF CONDUCTING MAX RUDOLF 1980 INSCRIBED PLUS RUDOLF LETTERS .  I recently acquired a good portion of the library of some professional musicians and have begun to list some of the better books, many of which are inscribed by their authors.  Please find another here, this one a very special copy because not only it is inscribed by Rudolf, there are three personal letters to the former owner of this book, signed by Rudolf and an article pertinent to their common profession-conducting.  The laid-in article is titled: “The Metronome Indications in Beethoven’s Symphonies,” also signed in ink across the top of the first page.  The book on offer is: “The Grammar of Conducting—A Practical Guide to Baton Technique and Orchestral Interpretation,” by Max Rudolf.  This largish hard cover book (6 ½ x 9 ½ inches, 471 pages) was published by Schirmer Books of New York, dated 1980, and the Second Edition (actually further abridged by Rudolf as he found some other corrections, noted in one of the personal letters laid-in, and annotated this copy for the former owner, noting that he did so on the half-title.  This book is bound in black boards with boldly embossed, gilt titles on cover and spine; it is protected by a printed dust jacket.  Please see the photos of the Table of Contents for your further information.  The book is well-illustrated with many musical scores and occasional diagrams of baton movement.

Condition:   This book is in very good condition.  The dust jacket shows some light wear including edge wear, a couple of abrasions and a small separation of layers as part of a tiny tear in the upper edge of the rear cover.   The inside upper edge of the dust jacket has some light spots which I am going to ascribe to tobacco smoke, something also seen, lightly on the top edge of the pages.  The hard covers are clean and the titles bold and handsome; there has been some minor bumping to the lower corners.  Inside, other than the inscription and mark-up by Rudolf, the book is clean and bright throughout.  Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound.  This book is not ex-library or a remainder.  The laid-in personal documents show their age but are not really damaged or blemished.

Shipping:   This book will be very carefully packed, with bubble wrap and solid cardboard protection and promptly mailed upon payment.  Please note that I do not charge for packing and handling; all you pay is the postage and sometimes not all of that!  Postage to US addresses for this medium-sized but rather thick hard cover book will be only $4.83 for media mail.   Combined shipping for multiple purchases is gladly offered.  You will pay full price for the shipping of the first book and half price for any others purchased that same week.   For example, two books with shipping at $4 each will ship for $6 combined.

The eBay site has become so popular that it is difficult to find your way back to a seller with an interesting array of listings.  Please consider “book-marking” my site so you can see a constantly changing inventory of other truly vintage books and/or collectible works, including any number related to the Performing Arts.

Please also be aware that all my current listings are “winter season” listings held here in Florida.  Once the asparagus start popping up in my garden at home in New York, sometime in April or early May, I will head north like the Canada Geese, ending these listings and reverting to another catalogue of different books held there.

Please don’t hesitate to send any questions; I will monitor closely and respond promptly.  Thanks and enjoy.
