Item Details French Sevres Hand Painted Mantel Clock, Circa 1855 Offers Welcome A fine antique 19th century mantel clock dating to circa 1855. Comprising of ormolu, bronze and hand painted red bleu celeste panels, this clock is exquisite throughout. The clock features a bronzed plinth housing a large Sevres hand painted panel depicting a cherub in flight amongst clouds playing the lyre surrounded by a floral garland. The whole raised on a combination of bun and scrolled feet and heavily decorated with chiselled ormolu swags and flanked by two ancient Greek style goddesses. The base is surmounted by a large bronze figure of a seated gentleman depicting the allegory of art. The gentleman sits assertively with one hand on his leg and the other supporting his pallet with paint. The clock case with hand painted Sevres porcelain dial with individual white cartouches housing black hand painted Roman numerals, each spaced by gold fleur de lis alongside a gold outer chapter indicating minute marks. The centre is decorated with a floral garland and gold minute and hours hands. The whole against a bleu celeste background and surrounded by an ormolu beaded rim. The clock case surmounted by an ormolu floral bouquet. The twin train mechanical movement strikes the hours and half on a bell. The mechanism is stamped by one of the most important and prolific 19th century clock manufacturers, Japy Freres, having won a medal of honour for that particular model. The clock comes complete with bell, winding key and pendulum. Approximate dimensions: 28 cm high x 35 cm wide
