The Streets of London, The Booth Notebooks - East, edited by Jess and Mike Steele Published by Deptford Forum, 316 pages. Paperback (N7001PE) From the rear side cover: A Victorian businessman with an interest in social policy set out to discover London's poor. Charles Booth's researchers walked every street in London in the company of the local constabulary, noting what they saw and categorising according to social class and character. From the 'vicious and semi-criminal' to the 'very wealthy', Booth's London is full of surprises, providing a snapshot of the capital at the end of the 19th century. This book presents the distinctive and diverse East London of the 1890s from the original research notebooks in the Booth Archive. Together with the 'maps descriptive of London poverty' and a comprehensive street index these walks provide a guide of unsurpassed detail. "Engaging and alarming, inexhaustible and compulsive, these Booth Notebooks present a townscape of crowded streets and bustling thoroughfares, of claustrophobic courts and dark back alleys, a fluid, fast-changing environment in which commerce and people vie for space and amenity, industry and identity. They evoke the sights and sounds, indeed almost the smell, of a congested capital a century ago." The streets of the east end are covered in over 60 detailed walks made in the last years of the 19th century, and together the record the social history of this part of the city. Areas covered include Wapping and Limehouse, Whitechapel, Stepney, Old Street and Aldgate, Shoreditch, Bethnal Green, Bromley and Bow, Hoxton, Dalston and Haggerston, and Hackney and Homerton. The condition of the book is generally very good. The covers have one or two very minor scuffs but are clean and bright, the spine is tight and intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. There is an old price printed and a small price sticker, both on the rear side cover.

When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
