This misguided and unproven practice was prevalent for decades and decades before medical science became evolved enough to discount any benefit of blood letting. In fact, it worsened any existing medical condition. Thus, it is amazing today to think that this practice was so wide spread and commonly used; and was even considered fashionable. The larger sized similar looking spring loaded instruments used for blood lettings are called Fleams; and were intended for use on horses, cattle, sheep, dogs, et al. The smaller sized spring loaded instruments were used for bleeding humans, are much rarer, have much smaller blades, and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. This is a fine Antique miniature spring loaded, French style recessed cased pocket sized lancet (not a fleam that are similar but much larger), that were used for bleeding humans. The case is only about 2 3/4" long x 1 3/8" deep x 3/4" tall. The spring lancet is only 2" long, and is the smallest and most desirable of these style spring lancets for humans. This small antique medical device weighs only .8 of an ounce or 24 grams. With the box, 1.3 ounces or 38 grams. This pocket piece would have been carried by a gentleman of means and sophistication, in order to "help" others with this practice. This piece "top of the line", and is spring loaded, i.e., inside the silver plated, hand line and zig zag engraved brass frame is a small, exceptionally strong steel spring, that retains it's original charcoal bluing. It is difficult to cock the spring and make it click when raised above the tiny interior stud, as the spring is extremely strong. It is easier to see what you are doing when locking the spring with the back cover off. Almost all of the original charcoal bluing of the spring present, and is strong as new. Note the images show the sliding back panel appears not to close all the way. It does close all the way; however is very tight, and very difficult to open once you close it tightly. This very thin cover fits into side channels, and slides off the back to allow different size / shape lancets to be used. There is one additional blade that came with this piece, appears it would fit, but I have not tried it. I purposefully left a small slot open at the top of this sliding panel, which allows the rounded pistol shape at the bottom to more easily pulled open to see the inside spring position when pulling the spring upward by the outside lever to be engaged by the locking stud. Note the bottom round plate has about a 1/32" gap at the bottom between the frame, which makes it easier to open the sliding panel by using your thumb nail to push down. Remember, this is a completely handmade piece about 200 years old. This is a small piece, and even with strong hands, it can be hard to lock the really strong spring into the locking position. Be careful to wrap the blade in a towel as when you exert lots of force, the blade could slip and cut someone severely. The blade is loose inside the lancet, and moves up and down. When the spring is lifted upward to the top, the spring automatically will lock into the cocked position with a click, held in place by a tiny stud that extends through back is affixed to the spring loaded release lever on the front that is now cocked and ready to press to release. The lancet is then positioned over a vein with the blade inside just below the tensioned spring. When the lever pressed, the spring drives the sharpened edge downward the inside length of the frame, which is the same measurement of the blade depth; thus, cleanly slicing the vein and allowing the bleeding process to begin. The depth of the cut is determined by the size of the cutting blade, and was much more "efficient" than using a manual lancet. There is just a little wear to the silver plating on the lever, and the tiny blade is sharp, has lots of original polish with some scratches, mostly on one side, and both sides show tiny spidering patina, which is very desirous naturally occurring aging that takes 100 years to form. Many of these early lancets were made in England, some in France and some in America. This piece is Maker marked "F.D." in a small oval, but I can't find who this Mark belongs to. Regardless, this piece was custom made due to the overall quality, fine hand line and zig zag engraving, very unusual silver plating, deluxe chamois case, and is Maker marked by Master Craftsmen who specialized in these implements. Custom made to order medical instruments tend to be early, before they were made as utilitarian items in much greater quantiles in a standard, plain brass pattern. There is an identical spring lancet that was known to be carried by Thomas Jefferson, and is dated to the 1780 period. The hand made wooden case is original and in excellent condition with gold leaf border and small center basket design; except for the ends that have loss to the thin veneer leather covering and appears to expose the underlying wax paper that covers the wooden box on the top and bottom ends. Inside the case is lined with soft chamois leather, and has a simple swinging brass wire catch that fits into a tiny brass eyelet in the front. Note that these style boxes do not have hinges. The lining and outside leather veneer act as a hinge. Obviously, this thin leather hinge where the leather is creased is quite delicate, and is the first thing to wear. This back leather hinge is in fine condition, and the box closes properly and aligns properly. This piece is in fine, working condition and the lancet is minty overall condition overall. This would make a great addition to any edged weapon, lancet, fleam, medical, or knife collection, or use as a desk accessory, gentleman's accoutrement, smalls, desk or Man cave accessory or conversation piece. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FREE U.S.A. & INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING, HANDLING, DELIVERY FOR USA PURCHASES, SHIPPING, HANDLING & DELIVERY IS FREE VIA U.S.P.S.
