He grew with a love of nature and started sketching as a boy. In 1860 the family moved to Dublin with their hat business but unfortunately a fire destroyed much of the stock and they fell on hard times. Alexander and his brother started a sideline in Taxidermy and were so successful that crowds visited their window displays which were soon pushing the hats into secondary position. However Alexander retained the desire to become a professional painter, taking night classes in drawing and continuing to paint whenever he could. In 1870 he had his first acceptance from the Royal Hibernian Academy and his first professional sale a year later. In 1875 he was a founder member and first Secretary of the Dublin Sketching Club which still flourishes today. Around this time a visit to Achill Island led to a life long love affair as he was entranced by the quality of light and the spectacular scenery. In 1899 he moved to Achill, building his own house and creating a fine woodland and water garden which is now open to the public. Williams continued to exhibit annually at the RHA for the next sixty years, showing more than 300 works in total and was made an Associate Member in 1884. Also exhibited with the Royal Society of Artists Birmingham and at the Dudley Gallery. Highly regarded in Ireland, his work is held in many institutional collections and there are a large number of auction listings which include a recent record of over £1000 for a watercolour sold in Dublin.
