We are auctioning various items of Japanese “Kutani Shoza” style porcelain tea ware which, we believe, was made in the 1950’s or 1960’s. They come from a matching part set which we have split up into different lots. All items are made of translucent china (cups and sugar bowl being “eggshell” porcelain ) and have been hand painted and decorated – so there are numerous small variations in the decoration of each piece. Extensive use has been made of red enamel and also of gold guilt (often together).
The set does not appear to have been used (there are no tea stains in the teapots or cutlery scratches on the plates ) and is in good condition. Whilst being a delightful set some of the decoration has minor faults with it, and there are also various tiny “fleabites” or inclusions – none of which are significant.
There is a set of “makers marks” (which we couldn’t decipher) on some items, some had no markings and others had a circular symbol (possibly the sun? ) in red and black. This symbol also appeared as part of the decoration on most of the items.
This auction is for :-_
· 7 x saucers 7¼ inches in diameter
The total (nett) weight of these items is about 1421 grams. Packed weight will be about 2.0 kg. We will combine any other purchases of this tea ware wherever possible.
Notes of possible interest :-
Kutani is the name of an area and a village in Mikata District, Hyōgo Prefecture of western Japan The name means “nine (ku)” and “valley (tani)”. Porcelain and China was produced by many different factories and trading shops in the area. From about 1850 until today almost all was made for export. It was usually marked “Kutani” and, sometimes, also the name or initials of the factory or individual potter who made or decorated the items produced.
The Shoza style was developed by Kutani Shoza in the 19th century. He included the use of imported enamels in addition to Japanese, which allowed the creation of shades of colo u rs not possibl e with just Japanese enamels. A combination of gold and these colo u red enamels was known as "Colored Kinrande". Kutani Shoza style porcelain has been exported from Japan, at various times, since about 1870.
