Torii Kotondo (Japanese, 1900-1976) made only 22 known prints – all of them images of beautiful women. All are among the finest works of art of the Shin Hanga movement, a movement of the early 20th century that revitalized traditional ukiyo-e art. Original prints by Kotondo are very rare indeed. When found, they are very expensive. Even reprints, such as this one, are difficult to find and always fairly expensive. Kotondo was born in Tokyo in 1900. His birth name was Saito Akira. At the age of 15 he was adopted by Torii Kiyotada, also known as Torii VII, head of the famous Torii family. Kotondo first studied with Kobori Tomone. When he was 17 years old he entered the famous painting and printmaking school of Kiyokata Kaburagi. Kiyokata Kaburagi's studio was the place where many other famous Shin Hanga artists like Kawaase Hasui and Ito Shinsui also received their major art training. A beautiful Kotondo design of a young woman in a light bathrobe emerging from a public bath carrying her towel and bathing utensils. Without question, this extraordinary print would be a superb choice for the discerning collector. It would be stunning displayed on your home or office wall. Kotondo’s masterworks are in the collections of many of the world’s great museums. Among them are the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago; the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, San Francisco; the San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego; the Los Angeles County Museum, Los Angeles; and the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.
