Seller: rutanyaalda (145) 100%, Location: New York, New York, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 264422700094 THE ORIGINAL '81 CATALOG LISTING HAS A TYPO: Please note the bowl's diameter is 7 and 1/4 inches, not 17 and 1/4th. As originally described in the 1981 Mary Pickford estate auction: "19th century. Circular bowl on raised base with fish designs. 17 [sic] and 1/4 inch diameter. See Illustration." She was presented this, I understand, while visiting Japan in 1929-30. Sotheby's NYC identified the maker as famous Meiji/Taisho ceramic artist Suwa Sozan (1851-1922), an imperial household artist and pottery expert. Most pieces can only be seen in public in the Museum of Imperial Collections and a few in the Tokyo National Museum. I attended the auction then in California and bought the bowl at the time, I've included collaborating photos from the original catalog (it's included in the sale--the spine is loose and there is shelfware and minor marginalia, but the pages are all there and readable). See this link in the NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/1981/03/12/garden/pickford-fairbanks-memorabilia-for-sale.html as well as this dating from the Mary Pickford website https://marypickford.org/mary-pickford-chronology/: "September 1929-January 1930: Mary and Doug embark on a “world tour,” visiting London, Paris, Switzerland, Egypt, China and Japan, returning to the U.S. via San Francisco on the Asama Maru." "Kyoto-ware" Age: 1850-1899, Original/Reproduction: Antique Original, Region of Origin: Japan, Maker: Suwa Sozan
