Barratt & Co - Circa 1890 "Violet Pansies Quarter Design" -- Aesthetic Movement - Majolica -- --Eight (8) of these tiles currently available!-- Presenting a beautiful antique, majolica, tile, created by John H. Barratt & Co., in their Boothen Works, Stoke on Trent, circa 1906. This lovely tile features a "checker board" floral pattern of molded, violet and amber hued pansy flower heads, surrounded by green leaves, and plain, reddish-brown, glazed squares. This tile is designed for wall installations exhibiting fields of like tiles, or alternating with solid brown tiles of the same size. Condition: Excellent. The tile displays only the typical, fine-celled, crazing found on such tiles and is not chipped or damaged. The reduced lower left corner was the result of the original tile installation as part of a back splash for a piece of furniture, and is not the result of abuse. In order to hold the back splash tiles in place, small brass screws, using small brass washers, where employed. Such back splash tiles will often display a reduced corner, which allowed the shaft of the brass screw to pass, allowing it to secure 4 tiles to the furniture. The verso is slightly water stained from its service as a back splash tile for the last 100 years..or so. The grip pattern is definitely recognized as used by John H. Barratt & Co.
