Very Large Stunning and Beautiful Late 17th Century Early 18th Century Louis XIVFrench Boulle or Cartel Clock ByBory of Paris Circa 1690 Boulle clocks of this early period are very hard to come by now as most of them are in museums and big country houses. There were many mass produced small examples made during the late 19th century and considering the work that went into making them even the later ones are tremendous value. This 300 year old example was actually around during Louis XIV's reign and was most likely positioned in one of France's Chateauxs. The dial has it's original gilt finish and is in superb condition with Louis XIV's side profile portrait above the middle, which was a sign of loyalty to the King. Condition is very good and in working order. Originally it would have been a verge escapement with short pendulum but with the invention of the anchor escapement many were converted to be more accurate. It strikes half hourly as well as hourly and because the bell is half the size of a longcase bell, the tone is very pleasant. Unlike the UK and Germany etc, the movement is not fusee but uses very large mainsprings. All the glass panels are original so as far as seeing that they have rippled over many many years and are more flexible than modern glass. The top section supporting the statue and covering the bell does lift of for easy transportation. It is a huge example and really does look lovely in the flesh which the photos don't really represent. It is so big that I was unable to take the photos where I normally do and indoors it is difficult to show the fine detail. I would really love to keep it but I just can't because of my circumstances. Please see photos as they form part of the description. The photos don't really do it justice as in the flesh it is much nicer and I apologise for the unavoidable light reflections in the photos. Dimensions: Height approx 87cmWidth at base approx 39cmDepth at base approx 16cm Please note;It is extremely unwise to send large or fragile clocks via the normal mail for obvious reasons, so this is collection only, delivery in person with 50miles of Tunbridge Wells, meet part way within reason or an approved courier of your choice only including covering the courier costs yourself. I strongly suggest personal exchange because of the glass in particular. Any queries please call 07731. 564008 Please remember as with all Antique and secondhand items, please be your own judge About age, condition and description before purchasing as I am not an expert in such things. Just a collector. I am having a major clearout of several decades of collecting and I shall be selling all sorts of things over the next few months with no particular theme so keep an eye out for my bizarre and not so bizarre items for sale. Any questions or any further photos, please just ask and please, please ask questions before the end of the sale. A bidder recently purchased an item and then moaned about it after the event because he hadn't read the description correctly.
