Light Weight Scale Pilots Various Styles and Sizes
We do not have the original names that these Pilots were and so we have given them a letter reference and a name purely for ordering purposes. You may know them by another name? if you have had one in the past. The pilots we recall that were similar by Flair (Albert and Manfred? Those were the days!)
Info – The How & Why? Tips on Putting them together. Other items required.
You will need other items to finish your pilots like the painted ones in the pictures. Please note the Standard Pilot’s in the listing will be white and un-assembled. You will need glue, balsa scrap and paint to finish to the standard of those shown in the pics.
These items are ex stock clearance of another business. It was pure luck that we came by them and we had a ‘one off’ opportunity to obtain them and we took it.
This style of Pilot Bust was very popular with various model aero kit manufacturers in the 70’s ,80’s and 90’s. Please look at the photographs. Most aero modellers of old will be familiar with these ‘Old School’ style pilots.
Moulded a back and a front, in thin white ABS, there are various methods for putting the pilot ‘halves’ together.
Gluing balsa sheet to each side, trimming the sheet to the shape of the pilot and then gluing the sheet to the sheet (front to back or back to front) gives a firm large gluing area or you can even double-sided tape the parts together with thin tape (on the balsa to balsa sheet area).
The balsa sandwich that is left at the centre of the two halves is easy sand and it fills any discrepancies between the two parts. You will need some 1’/8th or 3/32 balsa scrap to assemble using the above method.
Since this style of pilot was conceived adhesives we have today are much more capable than they were. The method we used to put some together was to tack the half’s with cyno and a ‘wiff’ of accelerant/ activator and then use Gorilla Glue which foams up and makes a secure bond.
A more difficult way to assemble is using polystyrene cement (Airfix Glue) although being able to tack the parts with cyno makes just about any gluing method easier than it used to be.
Then you paint it in colours of your choice and personalise the pilot the way you want him to look. Humbrol Enamels, Tamiya Acrylics, Humbrol Acrylics or similar all work well.
Note these are a discontinued range of items and so what we have listed is what we have, unless the original seller finds some more. These are OLD, New Stocks. Get them while you can.
Combining Post
Combining post is always a possibility and can save you money and so if you’ve won an item in one of our auctions or wish to buy other items in our eBay store. Buy them and then let us invoice you with a combined invoice. Because of the way eBay works, you much let us combine the items on an invoice before you pay. If you pay all the postage fee’s it is more messy refunding some of the postage and in some cases not possible. So, if you want to combine, let us know and let us invoice you!
