High Quality French Bronze & Ormolu Mantle Clock With Peasant Male Figure
A top quality French mantle clock in a ormolu and gilt brass/bronze case dating from around '1840/60'. On the top of this delightful ormolu case is the figure of 18th century peasant farmer with a sythe in his hand. Beautifully cast the figure stands bare footed next to other farming implements and some wheat and a tree stump. The figure has a great colour to it. The main body of the clock case looks like gilt or lacquered brass The feet are nicely cast from ormolu This is a beautifully cast clock with superb detail to the figure and the band around the middle all of which would clean up well. Two of the wooden blocks in the base of the case may well have been changed possibly because of historical wood worm? The engine turned silvered dial is good and has very finely detailed moon hands. The glass is good in the front and also in the back which is thickly bevelled .
The french movement is count wheel striking on a bell has nice wheel work but is a little dirty while with the springs good and fully wound. The movement has been ticking a little and striking only once on each hour so would need attention and a clean and service. The movement has '276 X R' and the number '6' stamped on it. Measures 18in high x 10in wide x 4.5in deep. The pendulum is included. A beautiful quality period clock that is sold as seen for restoration/parts and would prove a great investment.
