Chibimaruko-chan and Kojokoji Ukiyoe Tokaido Highway, Okutsu Limited30 Japan

Description We have received many requests for this item even after it was sold out, and we have decided to resell it again. The motif of this work is based on "Bijin Tokaido, Okitsu," a valuable series of ukiyoe works by Keisai Eisen, an ukiyoe artist of the late Edo period, which depicts both beauties and landscapes. Okitsu on the Tokaido Highway is located in present-day Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Eisen, the painter of this Bijin Tokaido, was one of Van Gogh's most beloved ukiyoe artists, and Van Gogh owned and copied many of Eisen's ukiyoe works. The late Edo period, when this work was produced, was also the peak of Ukiyo-e woodblock engraving and printing techniques, and it was highly acclaimed by critics. Okutsu, which is also Chibimaruko-chan's hometown, has a very beautiful terrain with Mt. Fuji to the northeast and shallow sandy beaches, as described in "Tokaido Meisho Zue" as "This road is the most beautiful place on Tokaido Highway with its scenery of mountains and rivers. Please enjoy the warmth of the handmade washi paper and the texture of the carefully carved and printed Ukiyoe woodblock prints, as well as the smiling scenes of Chibimaruko-chan and Kojikoji, their family and friends fitting comfortably against the background of Chibimaruko-chan's hometown. Some of the woodblocks used for engraving and rubbing. After carving many woodblocks for each color, and rubbing them over and over again, a single Ukiyo-e woodblock print is finally completed. The extremely delicate and advanced techniques of engravers and printers handed down from the Edo period give each piece of woodblock an indescribable handmade texture that makes it a gem.
