*Today I am listing yet another installment of saxophone gear which I am selling on consignment for saxophonist Frank Catalano. Today's items will include several vintage saxophone necks, many vintage mouthpieces from soprano to bari (including 3 NY Meyer alto mpcs!), and even a couple whole horns! For those of you who may not be familiar, Frank is a true heavy hitter in the jazz world and has been featured on multiple Grammy winning albums. He is also the quintessential gear hound, having amassed a collection of over 500 mouthpieces! He now endorses and plays Jody Jazz mouthpieces exclusively, so he purging some of his massive collection of mouthpieces that he has acquired over many years. Be sure to check out my other items for more great mouthpieces from this collection. There will be more to come later, so add me to your favorites list and check back later to see new additions. T his auction is for a vintage Goldbeck 'Superb' mouthpiece for soprano saxophone that has been worked on (opened and baffle added) by one the premier mouthpiece re-facers in the business. The Goldbeck company in Chicago, IL was the first to make all metal saxophone mouthpieces back in the 1920's (it was later acquired by famed mouthpiece maker Frank Kaspar who continued making sax mouthpieces under his own name utilizing the Goldbeck design). These are made out of solid German nickel silver (not plated brass like most metal mouthpieces). It is a very heavy mouthpiece! These were cast in two halves and soldered together, hence the visible seam line. It has cool 'fluted' exterior sides reminiscent of the era in which it was manufactured. It has a very large round chamber, typical of its era. These originally came in very close tip openings, which most contemporary players would find very difficult to play on. This one has been expertly opened up by Eric Greiffenhagen (of "the mouthpiece guys") to .070" (roughly equivalent to a modern Selmer J!). The new specs are engraved on the bottom of the shank, and Eric initialed the top. It looks like he also changed the original 3 stamp into an 8. In addition to opening the tip he also added an epoxy baffle for greater projection. This piece offers the best of both worlds! It is in excellent condition with no damage what-so-ever. The tip, table, and rails are perfectly smooth. Eric's work is second to none. I am sure his work alone cost at least $150, if not significantly more. Although Goldbeck mouthpieces in general are not particularly rare, examples for soprano are. I only see a couple of these per year come up on ebay. This is a great playing piece for a serious player!
Please feel free to email me with any questions. Thanks again for looking!
