Collection Information

We are pleased to bring you a striking collection of drawings by Georg Mayer-Marton, consisting primarily of nude and portrait styles executed in an expressionist style. The collection reveals his huge talent and passion for conveying the human form. The elongated faces and occasionally deformed bodies of his subjects draw a clear line of heritage to the Viennese artist Egon Schiele (1980-1981).

Biography

Hungarian-born Georg Mayer-Marton (1897-1960) studied at the Academies of Vienna and Munich, becoming Secretary and then Vice President of the progressive society of artists, the Hagenbund. His life took a turn in 1938 when he fled to England with his wife with the advent of the Nazis and the enactment of Hitler’s race. In 1940, during the London Blitz, his studio home in St John’s Wood was burnt by an incendiary bomb. Most of his life’s work and his personal possessions were destroyed. After over a decade of traveling and lecturing with the Arts Council Mayer-Marton took up a permanent position as senior lecturer at the College of Art in Liverpool. “The course in this technique which he instigated at the College was the first of its kind in the U.K, His civilizing influence and breadth of vision, underpinned by a deep understanding of Art History, combined with the technical skill of the practising artist, are remembered with gratitude by former students.” http://www.mayer-marton.com/

About Sulis Fine Art Your browser does not support the video tag.

Sulis Fine Art traces its origins back four generations. Benjamin Diamond opened a picture framing factory in Midtown Manhattan in the early 20th century. Originally known as Royal Art, the business worked closely with artists and museum institutions, developing a reputation for creating fine frames. Royal Art passed through the family and eventually evolved into Sulis, now run by Benjamin's grandson Bill, and his son Dan.

Based in the South West of England, we source art from across the British Isles and ship worldwide. We handpick all our stock and we've grown into a ten-strong team of art historians, photographers, restorers, studio technicians and despatchers.

We relocated to our Corsham studio in early 2020, leaving behind our small garden workshops in Bradford-on-Avon that had been our base for several successful years. Now located on the edge of the Cotswolds, our current home allows the team to work alongside our large catalogue of artworks, allowing us to provide you with fast global shipping and top-notch customer service. We are always striving to connect people with the art they love.

Each week we add new artworks to our extensive catalogue, across all styles, subjects, colours and periods. At the heart of Sulis, we rescue and restore lost and forgotten works, giving you the opportunity to find unique pieces and discover art in a new and different way.
