An interesting work, we present a super quality expansive landscape in watercolours, a shanty village on the coast, probably Mediterranean, southern French locality, monogrammed and indistinctly dated lower left, (blocked two-digit dating) 05 0r more like 35, for 1905 or 1935.   The work if French artist Charles Louis Geffroy DeChaume (French, 1877 – 1944).  Geffroy-DeChaume studied at the Lycee Henry IV and the Ecole des Beaux Arts, where he met Neville Lytton, so beginning a life-long collaboration.  In 1907 Geffroy-DeChaume and his wife moved to England, to Crabbet Park, the home Lytton shared with his wife.   He was also recorded as living at the Old Farmhouse, Downside, Cobbham, in Surrey. At this time, he received a major commission from the British Crown for a series of views of Windsor Castle.   Geffroy-DeChaume primarily belonged to the art communities to the north and west of Paris, including Pontoise, Anvers-sur-Oise, Conflans Sainte Honorine, Marlt-le-Rei and Asniers-sur-Seine that forms a sweeping crescent shape following the course of the rivers Seine and Oise.  It was here that many of the great names of the impressionist movement chose to live and work.  Geffroy-DeChaume returned to France in 1914 and volunteered for military service in the army.   He was wounded in the first engagement, returning to the front with the British as a peintre des Armees.  After the war, Geffroy-DeChaume and his family moved to Valmondois, Seine et Oise, keeping steady contact with his British artisans.  Geffroy-DeChaume exhibited his work widely, at the Royal Academy and the Fairfax Gallery, London over 40 times; in 1929 at the Des Artists de la Region Pontoise in Paris.  His paintings can today be found in the collections of the Imperial War Museum (as a war artist), the Fitzwilliam, the Royal Collection, Centre Pompidou and a series of dance studies in the Isadora Duncan collection and archive.  Geffroy-DeChaume died in Valmondoise in 1944.  His paintings are rarely found today, with some examples shown on.  artprice.com, findartinfo.com, arcadia.com, invaluable.com, askart.com besides several leading provincial British, French and Dutch auction houses.  A reference to him at the Centre Pompidou states his age as 1877 incorrectly to 1984.     Presented in very good overall condition in a later frame, this painting looks fabulous displayed.
