A very fine and rare 17th century inside countwheel 8 day duration longcase clock movement probably from the Daniel Quare and/or Joseph Windmills workshops.

The movement is of the very highest quality and finish with many interesting details.

Inside countwheel striking.

Large and tall movement plates (7.5” x 5”).

Six beautifully turned finned pillars.

Latches to the front plate engaging with the pillars.

Good original and finely made wheel work and pinions throughout.

Beautifully shaped and finished steelwork with a particularly fine hammer counter.

Highly decorated brass winding click springs on the great wheels.

Shaped backcock chops.

Formerly with bolt and shutter maintaining power mechanism (see collection of holes to the RHS of the movement).

The distinctively shaped backcock chops are very much a feature found on many Windmills and Quare movements. See plate 2.19 p50 & plate 5.5 p 124 ‘Joseph & Thomas Windmills’ by JA Neale for example.

The shaped hammer counter on the movement is identical to that in plate 5.5 in Neale above.

The elaborate shaping of the barrel clock springs is reminiscent of the sort of decoration that Quare added to many of his clocks. (see plate 279 ‘Early English Clocks’ by Dawson drover Parkes where such an elaborated click may just be made out from the image as well as the distinctive backcock chops mentioned above.It has to mention that Tompion also dcorated the clicks in a similar fashion.

It is known that there was much collaboration between the Windmills and the Quare workshops with movments being bought in one from the other.

Condition ;

The movement is lightly tarnished, is structurally sound and in really excellent condition.

The hour wheel and date shift wheel are missing however I have included a wheel and pinion of the correct size and count with friction spring to construct a new hour wheel.

The wheel trains run very smoothly when finger pressure is applied to the wheel trains and the escapement trips. Minimal wear to the pinions. Untouched for many years.
