From “The 36 Views of Fuji” Series The striking design is by Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760-1849), one of the most famous names in Japanese art. The title is Enoshima in Sagami Province. It is part of Hokusai’s magnificent series the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji and was originally designed between 1829 and 1833. In each print majestic Mount Fuji appears somewhere in the background. In this marvelous image travelers enjoy the beauty of Mount Fuji from the balcony of the Fujimi chaya, “The Fuji-viewing Teahouse,” in Yoshida, a town on the Tokaido Road. Hokusai shows us the daily life of these people. A waitress points out the majestic view of snowcapped Mount Fuji to those on the left center. On the right porters rest after setting down their heavy loads. On the lower left an old man, half naked, beats his sandal in an effort to soften it. Hokusai ‘s masterworks are in the collections of many of the world’s great museums. Among them are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago; the British Museum, London; the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia; and the Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo.
