From “The 36 Views of Fuji” Series The striking design is by Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760-1849), one of the most famous names in Japanese art. The title is Enoshima in Sagami Province. It is part of Hokusai’s magnificent series the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji and was originally designed between 1829 and 1833. In each print majestic Mount Fuji appears somewhere in the background. In this image Hokusai once again shows us the daily life of the people of his time, the Edo Period. Here farmers lead five oxen, heavily laden with reeds, along a path bordering the marshy fields of Ono on the Tōkaidō Road between Hara and Yoshiwara stations. Two women, also weighed down with reeds, and several other travelers accompany them. Egrets fly over the marsh and Mount Fuji rises in the distance above a clearing fog bank. A dramatic and pleasing composition. This great print would be a wonderful choice for the collector and the interior decorator. It would be striking displayed on your home or office wall. Hokusai’s masterworks are in the collections of many of the world’s great museums. Among them are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the British Museum, London; the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia; as well as the Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo.
