This extraordinary masterwork is the famous portrait of the courtesan Miyabito of the house of Ogiya in the Yoshiwara pleasure district of Edo. It is one of Kitagawa Utamaro’s (Japanese, circa. 1750-1806) masterpieces. Utamaro is one of the most celebrated of all the great Japanese ukiyo-e artists. His classic head and shoulders portraits of courtesans, geishas and teahouse waitresses are among the most sought after of all prints. In fact, many serious collectors consider Utamaro’s beauties to be the very soul of Ukiyo, the Art of the Floating World. This superb example of “bijin-ga”, pictures of beautiful woman, shows the famous courtesan Miyabito in her formal ceremonial dress. Miyabito first appeared in the Yoshiwara, the Edo pleasure district, in 1793 where she maintained the high ranking status of third at the Ogiya brothel. Utamaro’s masterworks are in the collections of many of the world’s great museums.
