Cabbage Murex and Others (1839) MUREX BRASSICA (now Cabbage Murex, Phyllonotus brassica) (centre) and others. Hand-coloured engraving by G.B. Sowerby (1st), pl. 33 of J.E. Gray's "Molluscous Animals and their Shells" (1839) from The Zoology of Captain Beechey's Voyage . . . in H.M.S. Blossom . in the years 1825-28, 1839. From1825 to 1828 Captain Frederick William Beechey explored parts of the Pacific and the Behring Straits in command of the Blossom. He was instructed to bring back to London collections of animals and plants from the places visited and to make notes upon them. John Edward Gray, of the British Museum, was one of the specialists entrusted with the materials collected and he was supposed to write the report on Molluscous Animals and their Shells. Pressure of work delayed completion of the report and George Brettingham Sowerby (1st) was called in to put the finishing touches to it. The text was undistinguished but the plates, of which this is one of the most arresting, maintained the high standards associated with the name of Sowerby. Dominating the plate is an exquisite engraving of the Cabbage Murex, described by the great French zoologist Lamarck as Murex brassica, one of the most striking shells of the west coast of Central and South America. During a visit to Paris, Gray was able to confirm the identification of the specimen illustrated. "I have compared this shell with Lamarck's own specimen, in the collection of the Prince Masséna", he says, "and it agrees with the one here figured in every particular; that it is the shell he described is proved by its having the name written on it by Lamarck himself." Even today specialists confirm the identity of certain species by examining specimens in the Lamarck collection, now one of the treasures housed in the Natural History Museum in Geneva.
