| UKIYO-E JAPANESE WOODBLOCK ART PRINT Tenjiku Tokubei riding a giant toad (天竺徳兵衛 ) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, 1825–1830. Tenjiku Tokubei (1612 – 1692) was a Japanese adventurer and writer, who was famous for his travels in China, Vietnam, Thailand, and India. Eventually he was reimagined in kabuki theatre plays as a powerful magician and became a very popular character. In this composition Tokubei, dressed in elaborate golden robes, is straddling a giant fire-breathing frog with bulging eyes. He is making a magical sign with his fingers! ★ Reproduced from an archive image, respectfully and lovingly restored and enhanced digitally, to remove the non-artistic blemishes and colour fading. ★ A3 print, 297mm x 420mm.
