A good early provincial 18th century dial and movement by John Rowning, Chippingham (near Cambridge). Original movement to dial with 5 finned pillars, inside countwheel, brass cased weights. Oak and mahogany case of compact proportions, 80 inches tall.

Complete and fully working/ serviced. The movement is in very good condition for the age and appears to have been correctly maintained, running very well.

Delivery and setup to UK mainland within 250 miles of BA22 (Somerset) for £95.

There are a few hits on google for a John Rowning working from Newmarket during the first half of the 18th century, this may be the same maker or perhaps a relative. Newmarket and the smaller hamlet of Chippenham are a few miles NE of Cambridge. Note the antiquated spelling, “Chippingham”.

The style of the dial and movement is clearly 1700 to 1715 London-influenced. The provinces tended to lag behind London a little with styling but Cambridge probably not by a lot due to its proximity.

The square 12-inch dial has ringed winders, ‘chevron’ engraving to the edges and corner spandrels (C&W number 8 pattern). The chapter ring is in the early 1700s style with half-hour and half-quarter markers. The fashion quickly changed to arched dials from around 1715/20 so a square dial of this style is an earlier feature.

The movement has five knopped and finned pillars and inside countwheel to govern the strike. Although rack striking was already known at this time it was not widely used until a little later 18th century. This movement is typical of those made from 1700 to around 1720.

This is an excellent quality dial and movement in very good condition, nice to see dials of this era with their original movements as many have been married.

The clock is complete with brass-cased weights, brass-faced pendulum, winder and trunk door key (working lock).

As with many clocks from this period the original case is no longer present. A clock like this would probably have had a grander walnut or lacquer case when it was made. The current (oak and mahogany) case is later 18th century and appears to have been with the movement for a long time. It has the advantage of being fairly compact, only 80 inches tall. It shows some of the usual age-related defects but has good colour and polish.
