Antique, Victorian, F.H. Howard,Sheffield, (1880s), electro plated nickel silver, E.P.N.S., circular sweetmeat- bonbon dish. This sweetmeat dish is circular in shape, with an embossedflower shape bottom, a pierced gallery, two ornamental handles and sits onthree ornamental legs, all in a typical, early Victorian design.

 

This sweetmeat dish is 52 mm.,high, 105 mm., in diameter,150 mm., wide including handles and weighs 121grams.

 

Actualsweets – candies, cakes, pastries, preserves – used to be called sweetmeats.This term, also from an Old English word, was first used in the 15th centuryand was still common in the 1800s.

Sweetmeatsare typically made by combining sugar, fruit, nuts, and sometimes spices. Themixture is then cooked and shaped into various forms, such as bars, balls, orcubes. Some sweets may also be coated with chocolate or other toppings. Theexact process can vary depending on the kind of sweetmeat being made.

Thebottom of this pierced dish is stamped FH (an archery target, with an arrow) S,EPNS, 10380. The maker is F.H. Howard, Sheffield and the archery target with anarrow was their trademark.

F H Howardbegan specialising in electro-plated cutlery, between 1866 and 1870, when  he was a partner in William Batt & Sons .  In 1870, Howardbegan working on his own account at West End Works, West Street, Sheffield.

Francis Howard registered a silver mark in 1878.  In 1881, he movedto Aberdeen Works, Sheffield a custom-built factory, in 1883. He sold platedfish servers and eaters, dessert, and butter knives, besides spoons andforks.  The trademark was ‘WELL DONE’, depicting a target pierced in thebullseye by an arrow.   Further silver marks were registered in 1894and 1901.

John W. H. Howard operated the firm, and in 1918, John had a partner –Addy Clapham (1869-1956). In 1921, Francis Howard was registered as privatelimited company.  The firm absorbed theHoward-Clapham partnership.  It also took over a small silversmith,Barclay & Co.

The first directors of Francis Howard Ltd were J. W. H. Howard andFrancis Thomas Clark, Addy Clapham remained a partner. In the twentiethcentury, the Howard business continued to be family-owned. The Howards acquiredH. Hunt, an electro-plate manufacturer at Backfields.  In the 1960s, Howard’s products included:‘Firth Stainless’ table knives and EPNS tableware (spoons, forks, fish eaters);stag-handled steak knives and forks; boxed sets and canteens of cutlery; pocketknives;tea sets and hotel ware; condiment sets; and reproductions of wares in oldSheffield Plate.  The firm’s output was usually sold to the trade, withcatering establishments and hotels as the main customers.  Under thefifth-generation owner, Andrew Francis Howard, the firm has continued to marketsterling silver tableware and giftware.  Aberdeen Works still stands inTrafalgar Street Sheffield, and is Grade II listed.

This antique EPNS electro plated nickelsilver, pierced sweetmeat dish, was pre-owned, in good condition, does not haveplate loss, dents, deep scratches or gouges. It does have minor scratches,marked, and rubbed areas, commensurate with age, usage & wear, Seller’sref. No. 00FFAA322
