Mike Dodd stoneware ash-glazed vase "One of Britain’s long established and influential potters, Mike Dodd has been making pots for over 50 years and yet retains a youthful enthusiasm for his chosen craft. Over the years he has established at least six workshops in locations around Britain, where along the way he has developed a passion for exploring materials found in the locality. ... [He] recently spoke on .. his current concerns and with typical modesty he reflected on things he has learnt. ‘I don’t know how well I understand the language of pottery,’ he explains. ‘You know what it’s like, you make a bunch of pots – similar ones – and you fire them and the kiln gives you a few that are particularly strong and better than one could have expected. I am excited by this and naturally want to share it with others.’ His principal concern has always been with form, stating: ‘I’m always interested in form because it is the language of [many arts] music, dance, sculpture and pottery. Cardew said pottery is about the majesty of form, but I’m not sure if that’s the right word to use. Vitality gives dignity to form.’ " (from Ceramic Review ) Mike's work is widely collected and he is represented by Goldmark Art among other galleries. Videos on his work can be readily found online.  This stoneware vase was bought in a Cambridge, UK studio pottery gallery in 1999. At that time, Dodd was operating a pottery in Beaminster, Dorset and presumably the vase was thrown and fired there. It was thrown from a tan-colored clay, covered with what looks like a whitish slip, and then with a golden brown ash glaze. The slip and glaze have been wiped upwards to create vertical stripes and the areas between the stripes have been combed, perhaps with a stiff-bristled brush. A horizontal line has been added just above the foot by wiping the glaze once around the pot. The way in which the ash glaze has pooled during firing in different areas with varied shades of golden brown is quite striking. About 8.25in (21 cm) tall and 5.5in (14cm) at the widest diameter. Excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Quick turnaround on orders and careful packaging.
