Decorative double hemisphere map of the world dedicated to William, Duke of Gloucester
This map for example still shows California as an Island, and an incomplete New Holland attached to New Guinea, partial New Zealand coastline and no Southern Continent. Extensive notations in both North & South America one even suggesting that the Americas might have been the lost Continent of Atlantis.
Early version, platemark 1 in the dedication panel, This map of the World by Wells is one of a set of 22 dedicated to William, Duke of Gloucester who was studying at Oxford at the time. Wells taught Mathmatics & Geography at Christchurch College , Oxford. Below the hemispheres is a dedication vignette, with to the right William the 13 year old heir to the throne shown standing under a tree with his tutor. On either side of this are small landscapes, One of ships arriving from the new world and the other of the Radcliffe Camera in Oxford
The engraver of the map is a Dutchman Michael Burghers who settled in Ocford in 1673 who initially worked under David Loggan before succeeding him as the Oxford University Engraver
