This masterwork is by Ando Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858), also known as Utagawa Hiroshige. Hiroshige was a master of the Japanese art of ukiyo-e. The design is from Hiroshige’s magnificent series The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō. The Tōkaidō was the eastern, coastal, road connecting the shogun in Tokyo with the emperor in Koyto. This renowned series was originally designed c. 1832-1834. This print is from a later edition. “The Bridge over the Yahagi River at Okazaki” represents the 38th station of Hiroshige’s renowned series “The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido.” Okazaki was located between the post stations of Fujikawa and Chiryu. This image shows a daimyo's cortège crossing the bridge over the Yahagi River towards the village and castle of Okazaki on the opposite bank. Tokugawa Leyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, was born in the castle. The bridge was the largest on the entire Tōkaidō highway. Would be striking displayed on your home or office wall. Hiroshige’s masterworks are in the collections of many of the world’s great museums.
