From the Sought-After 1896 Tōkaidō Edition! This marvelous image is by one of the greatest, and most famous, of all the wonderful Japanese ukiyo-e artists, Ando Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858). Ando Hiroshige, also known as Utagawa Hiroshige, was a master of the Japanese art of ukiyo-e, color woodblock prints. The subjects of Hiroshige’s work were atypical of the ukiyo-e genre. Most artists of his time focused on beautiful women, popular actors or scenes of the yoshiwara, the pleasure districts of the Edo period, 1603-1868. However, Hiroshige is best known for his landscapes and images of birds and flowers. He was one of the first to utilize unusual vantage points, striking colors and realistic perspective. In fact Hiroshige’s genius for landscape composition was recognized, and sometimes even copied, by some of the great European Impressionist painters such as Vincent Van Gogh. In 1832 Hiroshige travelled from Edo to Kyoto along the 300-mile Tōkaidō road, the imperial highway along the east coast linking the two cities. It was during this trip that he made the sketches he developed into his most famous series The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō. The series is considered to be one of the greatest achievements of Japanese art. It contains many of Hiroshige's best-loved and most extraordinary prints. This reprint is from a Meiji era edition of that series. “The Bridge over the Toyokawa River at Yoshida” represents the 34th Station of Hiroshige’s renowned series “The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido.” Yoshida was established in 1601 as a post station surrounding Yoshida castle. It was located between the post stations of Futagawa and Goyu and is now in the center of the city of Toyohashi in Aichi Prefecture. This classic print depicts the famous bridge as well as men on scaffolding making repairs to the castle. This is a wonderful opportunity for the antique print collector or the interior decorator. This impressive antique print would be striking displayed on your home or office wall and is bound to become a cherished family heirloom . Hiroshige’s masterworks are in the collections of many of the world’s great museums. Among them are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the British Museum, London; the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia; as well as the Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo.
