Remains of lacquer are present. The two Islamic inscriptions likely form the shahadah or 'declaration of faith and belief'. Together, both inscriptions form the formula which should read as, "ashhadu an la ilaha illa 'llah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulu 'llah";and literally translate as "I witness that there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah". The script is known as sini script, a Chinese calligraphic form developed for Arabic script characterised by thick, tapering strokes. Arabic-inscribed objects such as the present lot are generally considered to have been made for the Muslim communities in China rather than for export. Dimensions (W) 12cm x (H) 8.5cm Condition The condition is good, consistent with the estimated age and the material used.Worn lacquer and wear upon patternation as expected.
