It was published by The Educational Book Co., Ltd., of London, in circa 1910 (date of copyright). This was one of an 18 volume series, the “Charles Dickens Library” which in total contained 1,200 illustrations, including 500 special plates (FULL-PAGE), drawn expressly for this edition by Harry Furniss (1854-1925). Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), was arguably the best English novelist of the Victorian era, as well as being a vigorous social campaigner and was one of the greatest ever writers. He was most famous for his storytelling and numerous memorable characters, and achieved massive worldwide popularity in his lifetime. Barnaby Rudge: This is a classic historical novel dealing with the times of the Gordon Riots (anti-popery riots) of 1780 and concerns the murder of Reuben Haredale. Reuben’s Roman Catholic brother Geoffrey and the villainous Sir John Chester hate each other and conspire to prevent Geoffrey’s niece (Emma) and Sir John’s son from marrying each other. During the riots, Haredale’s house is burned down and his niece is carried off. Sir John’s son comes to the rescue and wins the right to marry Emma. Reuben’s murderer is discovered and we learn about the half-wit Barnaby Rudge who is later to be hanged but gains reprieve despite his part in the riots. The riots themselves form the focal point of the novel and as ever there is a large cast of interesting characters such as Dennis the hangman and the coquettish Dolly Varden. The book measures 7.5 inches x 5.4 inches x 1.75 inches and has 646 + 112 pages + illustrations. The book is in good neat condition for its age, with minor wear/bumps and is a little grubby/blemished to the original cloth hardback cover, with a little light foxing near the covers/rims. There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages. There is no dust-jacket.
