BENSON ANTIQUE BRASS MANTLE CLOCK INSET WEDGWOOD COLUMNS EIGHT DAY MOVEMENT Description: An impressive Adam's style antique Victorian J.W. Benson brass mantle clock (c.1873), inset with signed Wedgwood column plaques. This eight-day double barrel movement and pendulum retailed by the celebrated makers J. W. Benson of 25 Old Bond Street, London, clearly striking the hours and the half hours on a bell. The signed silvered dial with hours I-XII, highlighted in black Roman numerals. The movement, dial, pendulum and clock bracket are marked no. 9432 G.M.F., and the clock keeps accurate time throughout the 8 day period. The clock is wound by a key, as provided, and has a fast/slow adjustment mechanism to the top of the dial. Its handsome Neoclassical brass rectangular case features strong classical elements, such as capital and base columns, a pediment top over finely cast dentil adornments, and cast floral solid brass swags to the sides. The attractive Wedgwood blue and white Jasperware insets are decorated with double helix ribbon motif around a finely dotted line. The case stands on a stepped base, resting on four sculpted feet and also features an etched glass viewing window to the reverse. Background: The Benson family had been watchmakers since 1749.
