Braun Lectron | Ausbausystem 1 (1967)

Braun manufactured these Lectron System educational electronic sets between 1967 and 1969.

Each set comprises a range of magnetic modular pieces that can be freely arranged to form a variety of functioning circuits.

The sides and the bottom of each module are made of clear perspex so that users can see what’s inside. The top of each box displays the schematic symbol in diagramatic form.

The purpose of Lectron was clear, to make electronics more accessible to young people by encouraging them to build working circuits: radios, speakers, morse code transmitters etc.

Although often attributed to Dieter Rams and Jurgen Greubel it is likely that the system's original inventor was Georg Franz Greger and Braun played the key role of financially backing and marketing the product and re-designing the packaging. Either way the arrangement was a perfect marriage and Lectron stands as a perfect example of Braun's functionalism. There is Braun Lectron Sytem held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art - MoMA - in New York.

Very good condition with expected wear to the packaging and one or two of the modules may exhibit minor damages consistent with age and use. The set is complete and comes complete for a manual covering both Set 1 and Set 2. I have played with this briefly with my children (together with Grundsystem components and conducting plate which, please note, are not included here), and we made a few of the circuits, and everything seemed to be working. However I can't absolutely confirm that all elements are functional, so the set is sold here as a vintage collector's piece for display purposes only without guarantee of functionality. The box measures 35 x 46.5 x 8 cm.

Payment and Postage

Paypal is accepted and I do not add a surcharge to cover their fees. UK buyers only may also pay by cheque or postal order. If it's a cheque, please allow 7 to 10 days for it to clear. In exceptional circumstances it may be possible for overseas customers to pay by another means such as bank transfer in GBP£ by prior arrangement.

All buyers please make contact within 3 days of auction. Payment is required within 7 days . It has become necessary to offer only tracked forms of postage for high value items. This is because of the increasing number of instances of attempted fraud and I'm acting on unequivocal advice that I have received from eBay and Paypal. Please be assured that the postage options shown are calculated at cost, with a minimal handling fee to cover packaging materials for larger items. I always pack to a professional standard; please see my feedback page for customer testimonies. If you have any questions about any of this please contact me.

Non-payment

All non-paying bidders are, without exception, reported to eBay. This is not for the sake of being vindictive, but because eBay charges retrospective fees calculated on the actual sale price of items and this money needs to be retrieved. It's hard enough to make ends meet on here as it is! Thank you for your understanding. Please refer to eBay's policy on non-payment for more information, including its ramifications for the bidder.

Condition of items

Please note that, unless clearly stated otherwise, my listings are for vintage/antique items and therefore, by definition, are not going to be in the same condition you would expect from a brand new item. Please be assured that I always endeavour to offer the most accurate description possible of the item's condition and take multiple illustrative photographs.

Vintage electrical items

All vintage electrical items are sold as purely decorative items in original 'as found' condition without any electrical guarantee or safety guarantee whatsoever. They must always be safety checked by a qualified electrician (in the country of intended use) before use.

Returns

Returns are possible, if reported within 7 days and by prior arrangement, if a mistake has been made in the listing and the item is not as described, but for no other reason. I'm afraid that straightforward buyer's remorse does not qualify and that all return costs must be borne by the buyer.

Thanks very much for taking the time to read this. If there is anything I haven't covered please don't hesitate to contact me.
