Signed by award winning artist Santana Seonia of the Coyote Clan from the Jemez Pueblo Pottery in New Mexico a mid 20th century storyteller friendship bowl is Native American Indian hand made and painted pottery. Satana Seonia was born in 1947, the daughter of potter Juanita Toledo and mother to potter Juanita Sando.  Satana's pottery is at the Smithsonian. The storyteller friendship bowl features four figures inside the bowl and handcrafted by Jemez Pueblo artist Satana Seonia.  It is signed by her "Seonia" with the place name JEMEZ, NM. This hand coiled bowl features colourful traditional designs. The geometric designs hand painted, represent the story from the natural world.  The four figures look like women perhaps friends together unlike other storyteller figures that feature a grand parent or mother depicted telling a story to children. The figures inside the bowl is different to other bowls with the figures outside of the bowl.   The bowl is 7 cm tall.  The clay is likely to be from the grounds of the Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico.  The pottery is hand painted with all natural slips and features traditional Jemez designs in black, white, tan, blue and red.  It is in good condition without chips or cracks.   New Mexico has 19 Pueblo communities and the art they produce today traces it history to ancestral Puebloan people who made pottery out of necessity over many generations.  Now Pueblo pottery has become known and collected throughout the world for its remarkable beauty and craftsmanship.  It has been made in much the same way over thousands of years with every step of creation crafted by hand.  Pueblo potters have passed on the traditions to the next generation who preserve and add modern twists creating an art form that has spanned centuries and is treasured for its rich symbolism.  Demonstrating Native Americans' connection to and respect for the natural world, this bowl with figures is meaningful and inspiring work of art.
