Stone 1847-1938 Designer and Silversmith This book about the famous artist of silver, Arthur Stone, makes a fabulous addition to a library or reference collection on the art of silversmithing. The book is authoritatively and lovingly authored by the craftsman's great niece, Elenita Chickering, and it chronicles Mr. Stones life and maturation as a virtuoso in his art. In reading this book you learn both a greater appreciation for the skill of the art and of the struggles that true artists endure when faced with the need to put bread on the table. The book is full of details about the making and selling of silver in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and of course the work of Mr. Stone. Arthur J. Stone made his life in Gardner, Massachusetts a town more reknowned for the manufacture of fine furniture than its items of silver. However, Gardner was also home to the F. W. Smith Silver Company a contemporary and worthy rival of Tiffany, Gorham, and the William B. Durgin Company. It was at F. W. Smith that Mr. Stone first began his long association with the city and later opened his own successful business. The book has over 30 color plates and dozens of black and white photographs of Mr. Stone's silver pieces and Mr. Stone's life. 196 pages. Arthur Stone's work is found in many private collections along with numerous works in museums, including The Gardner Museum, The Boston Museum of Fine Arts (that also owns many of his personal papers), the Worcester Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum (NY), the Art Institute of Chicago, the Denver Art Museum, the Boston Athenaeum, High Museum of Art (Atlanta), Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, and others.
