The tiwara (or ci wara) crest, fixed to the dancer's head using a wicker basket, was the attribute of an initiatory society whose fundamental principles are to harmonize community life, fertility of cultures and the place of Man within the cosmos. During these ritual ceremonies, the mask, then inert and profane, became the attribute of a costumed dancer who gave it life and speech. Because it is only through movement, and the wearer more particularly, that the mask finds its effectiveness and its meaning. The tiwara were worn during agricultural ceremonies, and generally danced in pairs. Representing highly stylized antelopes, male and female, they are decorated with ridges and herringbone patterns and the horns are finely twisted. A symbol of fertility, the tiwara express the art of making the land fertile; symbol of the origins of Man, they also take on the meaning of the creation of the universe by analogy of symbols and myths.
Superb Ci-wara crest, with an elegant sculpture, and featuring very fine engravings throughout the piece. The patina, of dry appearance, attests to the age of the piece.
