It has a mother of pearl lock escutcheon with its key working in the lock, locking & opening again the box as originally intended. It shuts and locks flat and square at the front, however at the very back one hinge ( although strong and firm with the box opening well ) has a little more space than the other, see photo of the back of the box.

Possibly yea caddy but pretty large for that. 19th century welsh oak with either a mother of Pearl or possibly bone inlay. The back two legs look like they’ve been damaged at some point but the body is strong and rigid and doesn’t appear affected by this. One hinge of the lid could do with fixing but the lid opens and closes as it is, just a little wobbly. Great looking, substantial caddy. Incredible Antique Large French Inlaid Mahogany Tea Caddy Collectable & Rare - Superb inlaid antique (probably dating to circa 1850) large tea caddy. Purchased privately from a Scottish castle contents sale about 9-10 years ago. (circa 2010). Its incredibly large and measures 30cm wide x 17cm in height (when lid closed) x 15cm deep. It cost me £350. I adore the inlaid (possibly Marquetry "the" on the top lid which spells "tea" in french). A really unique and one off piece. Condition I would say is average as it would benefit from a professional polish, there are a few minor losses to the lower side and reverse, and there's the old age split (left corner as you look at pics of the caddy front on). Still displays fantastically well, and is fresh out of my display cabinet. A fantastic investment.
