Wales by Joan Blaeu 1645 Copper engraved map on hand laid paper with early hand colouring. Joan Blaeu (1596 - 1673) took over the running of his father's Amsterdam map publishing business in 1638 in partnership with his brother Cornelis. His farther had established one of the foremost map publishers in Europe and his two sons continued to expand the business.  After Cornelis died in 1642 Joan continued under his own name.  Map produced by the Blaeu family are considered some of the finest and most accurate maps made in the 17th century.  This map probably comes from 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum sive Atlus Novus' Vol.IV first published in 1645. Page size is 59cm by 51cm Map area is in good condition for age, engravings are clear. Some creasing. Early, possibly original, hand colouring.
