GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a superb antique hand-carved wood Phurba or Kila ritual blade, from Nepal.  In Sanskrit it is called the kilaya or the kila, and in Tibetan it is called the phurba, phurpa. The phurba is also called 'the magic dagger' in the Himalayas. 'Phur' is translated from the Sanskrit 'kila' and it means peg or nail. Padmasambhava - the historical teacher who is said to have finally converted Tibet to Buddhism - is widely assumed to have invented the phurba. Padmasambhava used the phurpa to consecrate the ground when he established the Samye monastery in the 8th century. These ceremonial daggers or "nails" are used in rituals to expel demonic forces, and also function in Buddhist practice as an aperture between physical reality, the illusory world, and the "real" world which lies behind. At the center of the Phurba is usually a symbolic object called a Vajra or a Dorje, also known as a thunderbolt and diamond scepter. This particular symbol is used to dispel evil forces and hence came to symbolize spiritual forces and the power of knowledge over ignorance. Like the Phurba it adorns, the Vajra is used to gain access to a state of grace which lies behind the illusion of physical reality. The top of the phurba shown is crowned with the heads of the three wrathful deities who are invoked to dwell within the phurba to represent the destruction of hatred, delusion and greed. This stunning piece measures 2 inches in width by 2 inches in depth by 10.75 inches in height (5.08 cm by 5.08 cm by 27.3 cm), which includes the specially designed, hand-made iron museum display stand. It is in very good condition, showing wear consistent with use, mainly from rubbing, and dates probably to the early 20th century. It is guaranteed authentic and would make a superb addition to any collection of Nepalese art or Buddhist art in general.
